UK Drone Compliance Calculator

Use the interactive calculator to check which IDs, qualifications and permissions you need for your planned drone flight. Instantly see the correct category, CAA requirements, insurance, and more, all customised to your operation.

Designed for typical UK operations in the Open and Specific Categories.

For unusual operations such as very large drones, very high speeds or special environments, treat this as a starting point and cross-check with the CAA.

This tool helps you understand likely requirements for common operations. It is guidance only and does not replace your own risk assessment, your insurance conditions, or formal CAA approvals. Visit our legal page for full details.

Operation Details (Fields marked with * are required)

Choose the class mark shown on your drone. If your drone has no UK/EU class mark, choose one of the No class mark options to enter the Maximum Take-Off Mass (MTOM) manually.

Use the manufacturer-stated MTOM. If MTOM is unavailable, enter the ready-to-fly weight including batteries and payloads.

  • < 100 g → IDs optional but strongly recommended.
  • 100-249 g without a cameraFlyer ID required, Operator ID optional.
  • 100-249 g with a cameraFlyer ID and Operator ID required.
  • ≥ 250 g → both Flyer ID and Operator ID required.

Separation from People and Assemblies

Open Category A2 and A3 use horizontal distance from uninvolved people where a minimum distance applies. A1 does not apply a fixed minimum separation distance from uninvolved people, but overflight should be avoided where possible and kept to a minimum. PDRA-01 uses separation distance. If the aircraft will fly directly over uninvolved people, select the overflight option.

Enter the minimum distance between the aircraft and any uninvolved person.

If flying using FPV in the Open Category or under a PDRA-01 OA, you must have a competent observer stood next to you who maintains VLOS of the drone at all times.

How will you fly FPV? *

We ask for the purpose of flight solely to determine whether third-party liability insurance is legally required. Under UK drone regulations, operational risk is based on how and where you fly, not whether the flight is commercial or recreational.

Assemblies of people are gatherings where people cannot easily move away because of the density of the crowd, such as concerts, festivals, marches or rallies.

This is measured horizontally from the aircraft to the assembly of people.

If flying in the Open Category or under a PDRA-01 Operational Authorisation, you must not exceed 120 m (≈400 ft) AGL

Open A3 Category requires you stay ≥ 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial or recreational areas.

Are you planning any of the following operations?*

  • Carrying or dropping items
  • Spraying liquids or chemicals
  • Flying multiple drones at once
  • Carrying dangerous goods
  • Flying very large drones over crowds
  • Transporting people
